When fetal death occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy, it is referred to as stillbirth. It is not too common, they say close to .5% of pregnancy ends in stillbirth. It occurs in about one in 200 pregnancies. It may affect anyone. It is very hard to predict when it will happen or who will experience it. Stillbirth occurs in with all races, religions, etc. A friend, a relative, or you, yourself, may experience stillbirth. It is a horrible experience for everyone involved but if you can educate yourself about the issue, it may be easier to deal with in the future.
There are a few
things that seem to cause still birth. Information about
what the causes are is very important. It is very
important to explain exactly what happened to these suffering
mothers so they can cope with this tragic event. A
cause can also help explain what happened and educate the
families for future pregnancies.
Identifiable causes of stillbirth generally fall into one of
three different categories: problems with the placenta or
umbilical cord, birth defects in the baby, maternal illnesses or
conditions which may sometimes affect pregnancy.
Placental problems. Placental abruption, is a condition where the
placenta peels away from the uterine wall
before delivery.
It deprives the baby of oxygen, sometimes resulting in fetal death.
Placental abruption is diagnosed using an ultrasound.
Birth defects.
Birth defects are
often overlooked causes. Chromosomal abnormalities
are the most common cause of miscarriage. They can cause fetal death at any time during
pregnancy. Structural malformations that are
not caused by chromosomal abnormalities, but can result from genetic,
environmental or unknown causes.
Babies that are small for their gestational have a higher risk
of death from
asphyxia (lack of oxygen).
Infections. Bacterial infections can cause fetal death. These infections often
cause no symptoms in the pregnant woman, and may go undiagnosed until
they cause serious problems. Diabetes or hypertension, and their
treatments, sometimes cause stillbirths. An increased risk for
stillbirth is also associated with the use of recreational
drugs, particularly cocaine. Women with high blood
pressure are at increased risk of having a growth-retarded baby.
In addition, there are many other rare causes of stillbirth.

Stillbirth
Photographs of stillborn infants and newborns who don’t make it home from the hospital are usually very difficult to look at, and are usually the only image that the parents have of their child. Through this free service, our skilled digital artists work with a digital copy of your original, eliminating medical equipment, removing unsightly marks and even replacing the background if desired.
